5 Lies We Tell Ourselves About Self Care

Aug 17, 2021 | By: TaraLyn Photography

When it comes to self care some of us have little things we do for ourselves, some of us have big things, and some of us will make up a million excuses of why we can't do something for ourselves right now. All those excuses doesn't change the fact that we all need to take time to take care of ourselves too!

1. I'm taking care of myself by taking care of others.

Sorry, but no. Yes taking care of others can bring you joy, but that isn’t taking care of you. That is taking care of other people. It is okay to do stuff for others, but not if your cup is empty, you can’t give from nothing. You need to do some things for yourself so you can do for others.

2. I’m a mom, my kiddos always have to come first.

Wrong mama. You were a person before a mom, just because you now have a child doesn’t make you less of a person. Now you are responsible for you AND someone else. Just remember what they say when you’re on a plane, in the case of an emergency you need to put the mask on yourself before you put it on your kids. Truth is, if you pass out you can’t help your kids. This goes for self care too. If you are burnt out and not taking care of you, you can’t take care of them the way you want to.

3. All I need is a solo bathroom trip (also kinda for moms).

Lies. You need more than that. Is it nice to be able to pee in peace and quiet without kids knocking on the door, absolutely, does that equal self care - hell no. Not even close. That is just using the bathroom. Now one way this can become self care is if you lock yourself in there for a bit to go the bathroom, do a face mask, watch your favorite show on your phone while hiding in the bathtub with your favorite snack. But a quick trip to the potty solo isn’t self care, its just a bodily function.

4. I wouldn’t even know what I would do for me, so I’ll just skip it.

Stop. Can we loose sight of what our needs are, YEP, does that mean they go away, NOPE. If you don’t know things you want to do for you, then you need to stop and do the work. Think about it, write about it, try new things, whatever you need to do to find something for just you.

5. I have bigger things to spend my money on.

Money isn’t an excuse. We always have things that are “more important” to spend our money on. But no where did we say self love equals spending money. You can find things to do for you that cost you nothing. However, if you have something you really want to do for yourself you need to work it into your budget. Because budgeting for self care is cheaper than bail money.
